The Good Pub Guide

I decided it was time to tackle male grossness head on – the groin-scratching, the throat-clearing, the i’arting – and if anyone asked I would call it ‘Chaucerian’.

I enjoyed writing Dorothy and Gary’s tirades against the opposite sex. Tor once Gary gets a proper right of reply. I often felt I was giving men too much of a hard time but in the end the show is called Men Behaving Badly rather than An Even-handed Examination of the Way Men and Women Both Sometimes Possibly Go Too Far.

There is a comedy device whereby a scene ends with a character saying, ‘You’ll never catch me on that bicycle’, and then you cut to the character riding the bicycle. It is probably the kind of cartoony mechanism that gives sitcoms a bad name but I often can’t resist them. Hence here Gary’s ‘we’re not stepping inside your place until you agree to reinstate him’, then we cut to him and Tony standing in the pub. Always gets a laugh, trust me. But I draw the line at other traditional sitcom set pieces, like the ‘tortuous misunderstanding’ in which two characters talk at cross-purposes for five minutes. That is just silly.

This was John Thomson’s first outing as the Crown’s new landlord. I meant Ken to be a simple man confused by life, but in this episode he just comes across as mentally ill.
